Stains on expensive leather handbag.?

I just bought a 600 dollar handbag and set it onto a counter to pay for something. When I picked it up, the whole backside of it had some sort of green stuff on it. It's camel colored leather. I tried scrubbing it with a waschloth and water but it just started to make the pebbled leather look worn. Is there any way I could get the remaining discoloration out without damaging the bag? I'm desperate!
